Latest statistics reveal that Australians are a nation of Internet daters. With 52% of women and 45% of men trawling the Internet to find their perfect match.

The holy grail of dating sites RSVP, claims that 48% of single adults have tried it and more than two thirds of adults in NSW know someone who has met their current partner through online dating.

So why are we turning to the Internet to find a mate? What has happened to the old finished methods of flirting and fumbling after a night out at a bar? Why are our beer goggles so firmly focused on our iPhones and iPads and not staring blearily at a potential squeeze across a crowded dance floor?

In this thought provoking session, aficionado of Internet dating Julianne Pierce will reveal some of the facts and fictions of Internet dating. Can a computer programme really help us to find true love? Should you lie about your age online and use a profile photograph that is 10 years old? When should you go on your first date and how do you make a hasty exit if Mr or Ms right turns out to be Mr or Ms wrong?

Whether you are happily married, just divorced or a confirmed bachelor or bachelorette, you will be fascinated by this foray into love and where to find it in the 21st Century.

Julianne Pierce is a producer, writer and performer. Her alter ego Madame Ivana is a well-known matchmaker and fortune-teller who travels the world in pursuit of romance, excitement and the perfect oyster.

Matthew Sleeth is an Australian artist who lives and works between Melbourne and New York. His multidiscipline practice is conceptually driven across a range of media including sculpture, photography, video and public installation. Matthew has exhibited as part of a number of international events including the Odense Triennial (Denmark), Berlin Photography Festival, Noorderlicht PhotoFestival (Netherlands), the Venice Architecture Biennale, Art Chicago and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Following his 2009 solo show, Various Positions, his large-scale sculptural exhibition The Rise and Fall of Western Civilization (and Other Obvious Metaphors) opened at Claire Oliver Gallery (New York) in December 2011. In August 2009 he participated in Long Distance Vision at the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne) and in 2008 his work was installed across billboards, screens, public spaces and galleries as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.
He is currently a Ph.D candidate in Media Arts Department at RMIT University, Melbourne.
His books include Ten Series/106 Photographs (2007), Opfikon (2004), Survey (2004), home+away (2003), Tour Of Duty (2002), The Bank Book (2001), Roaring Days (1998) and artist books Red China (2005) and Call Of The Wild (2004).

Deborah Kelly is a Melbourne-born, Sydney-based artist whose works across media have been shown in streets, skies and galleries around Australia, in the Singapore and Venice Biennales, and elsewhere. Her award-winning collaborative artwork with Tina Fiveash, Hey, hetero! has been shown in public sites from Sydney to Glasgow, and is taught in universities from Winnipeg to Hong Kong. She is a founding member of the art gang boat-people.org, which has been making public work around race, nation, borders and history since 2001. Her cross-media work considering the rise of religiosity in the public sphere, commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, included public service announcement videos in train stations and projections onto clouds over Sydney Harbour. The participatory memorial she devised for the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre was performed in 20 cities and towns around the world on 4 June 2009. Most recently, her 2012 commission for GOMA in Brisbane comprises 37 contemporary portraits modelled on Renaissance Holy Family imagery. Her work won the 2009 Fisher’s Ghost Award, the 2009 Screengrab International New Media Art Award, and the 2012 Albury Art Prize. Artspace will publish a monograph about her work late in 2012.

SPIRIT PATROL Tuesday July 31 6pm CANBERRA MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY THEATRE

Media artists Ross Gibson and Kate Richards have been collaborating for over a decade on a significant body of electronic artwork called “Life After Wartime” based on thousands of original scene-of-crime images dating from 1945-1960 and Gibson’s original texts. Gibson and Richards will talk about “Life After Wartime” with particular focus on the newest project – a video titled “Spirit Patrol”. “Spirit Patrol” weaves an evocative tale of intrigue, betrayal and darkness set in Sydney in a period of intense cultural change and personal disruption. It is a narrative that unfolds across the city – from busy Broadway and the port, to drab suburban yards, from the seaside and the badlands of the urban fringe, into nocturnal back-rooms. The resolute, detailed images and deep blacks, rythmic visual composition, and haunting cinematic sound design touch on the austerity and uncertainty of current times. Bringing the images back to light, the artists ask: What if you dreamed these pictures? Are they moments frozen in time? Or scorched insights returning from another era? Night sweats of the soul revisiting now from some unquiet surge of the past?

BIOS
Kate Richards is a Sydney-based electronic media artist. Recently she has shown at DreamWorlds Beijing, The Hordern Pavilion Sydney, Wollongong Regional Gallery, Plimsoll Gallery Hobart, The Victoria Centre for the Arts. Kate also works as a multimedia designer/producer for cultural sector clients including Stalker Theatre Company, Urban Theatre Projects, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and artists Barbara Campbell and Brad Miller. Kate co-ordinates the Masters of Convergent Media at the University of Western Sydney. http://katerichards.net

Ross Gibson is an award winning writer and media artist whose installations, films and books have been distributed world wide. He is currently Professor of Contemporary Arts at Sydney College of the Arts. As a curator Ross has worked at the MCA, Museum of Sydney, the Drill Hall, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Object Gallery, the Pacific wave Festival, and he was the inaugural commissioning curator at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne. Ten of Ross’ books have been published, and over 30 book chapters, as well as dozens of journal articles – making him one of Australia’s most well respected authors and editors on cultural and historical themes. http://www.rossgibson.com.au/

Dorkbot CBR November 9 ISEA odyssey

dorkbot cbr has been on study leave but worry not, in November its back – with back to back sessions. Both Tracey Meziane Benson and David Broker have been in Istanbul for the Istanbul Biennale and the 2011 ISEA, International Symposium on Electronic Art. First up, they will take you on a virtual tour of Uncontainable, the exhibition of the ISEA exhibition. Uncontainable was an impressive and comprehensive show in many venues across the city that included lots of Australian content. There were squillions of clever ideas and interesting uses of all sorts of technologies – old and new. Tracey, who gave a paper at the conference, will also talk about some of the bigger issues that are current in the zone of emergent media and her residency in Turkey. This is a great opportunity to catch up on the happenin’ things in the world of electronic art and too see what people doing strange things with electricity are actually doing.

Forget The Big Bang and come to dorkbot cbr, it’s the real thing !

Warren Armstrong Augmented Reality Dorkbot CBR 26 July 2011

Warren Armstrong is a new media artist whose web-based art, sonification and augmented reality works have been exhibited around Australia and New York. His most recent works include the Information Virus (2010), a 3D augmented reality work; and the Twitterphonicon/Twitter Hymn Book (2010) with composer Amanda Cole, an installation that converts Twitter updates into music.

He is also the curator of (Un)seen Sculptures, an exhibition of international 3D augmented reality art that is being staged in Sydney, Canberra & Melbourne throughout 2011.

Ian Haig works at the intersection of visual arts and media arts. His work explores the strangeness of everyday reality and focuses on the themes of the human body, devolution, abjection, transformation and psychopathology, often seen through the lens of low cultural forms.

His work has been exhibited in galleries and video/media festivals around the world. Including exhibitions at: The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; The Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide; The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Artec Biennale – Nagoya, Japan; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Art Museum of China, Beijing and The Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles. In addition his animation and video work have screened in over 120 Festivals internationally. In 2003 he received a fellowship from the New Media Arts Board of the Australia Council.

Chronicles of the New Human Organism
Short synopsis: part history, sci-fi / apocalyptic warning, contemporary spirit world, sect, nature documentary, post new age, futuristic vision, pseudo science, cult, mondo, recruitment, crank sci -fi, junk science, discovery channel from another dimension, educational video – exploring the extremes and the outer limits of human belief systems…
“Imagine putting a video camera into the hands of a Death Valley outsider artist convinced that the mother ship is about to land at any minute, and that when it does a new phase of human evolution will begin. Chronicles of the new human organism is such a film.

Taking the form of the nature documentary exploring the strangeness of the world around us as a starting point – Chronicles of the new human organism takes the viewer on a journey through a range of ideas, systems of knowledge and questions relating to the origins of the human species, the significance of the reptilian mind, new forms of human sexuality, parasites, the communication with the dead, and alien evolutionary technology.

The work references and cannibalizes ideas derived from Al Fry, JG Ballard, Rudolf Steiner, Wilhelm Reich, The Heavens Gate cult, Carl Sagan and Oscar Kiss Maerth. Delivered with a portentous, yet strangely soothing voiceover, Chronicles of the new human organism re-interprets the history of visionary thinking about the human species through the po-faced filter of Erich Von Daniken’s Chariots of the Gods and the shockumentary style of Mondo Cane.

One of the aims of Chronicles of the new human organism has been to make a work that defies categorization or another way of looking at the categorization of the human itself. It is a perverse and compelling hybrid of educational video, new age recruitment campaign and cult manifesto: the Mondo movie genre with a good dose of pseudo science.
The sound and music for the video was composed by PH2 (Philip Brophy and Philip Samartzis). Like the visuals, it draws on a range of references in its production from Jerry Goldsmith sci-fi scores such as Logan’s Run to pulsating electronic noise from Forbidden Planet and textural location field recordings of some of the weirdest places on the planet”. – Darren Tofts

Kuuki at Dorkbot CBR Tuesday 31st May 2011

We hope you can join us in Dork for the second chat for 2011 when
Kuuki join us via Skype from Brisbane.

Kuuki is an art, design, and media production collective directed by
Gavin Sade and Priscilla Bracks.

In Japanese kuuki means air or atmosphere and is used colloquially in
phrases such as kuuki o yomu which literally means read the air, but
can be interpreted as understanding without explicit information or
unspoken moods or feelings.

Kuuki is also used to refer to “the things we take for granted, but
can’t live with out”, and for us this is one of it’s most important
meanings, because we believe that some of those things taken for
granted, are art and creativity…

Priscilla Bracks

Priscilla is a visual artist practising in photography, illustration,
installation, and new- media art. Her practice explores the world she
inhabits – from the interior landscape of the mind, to human
relationships, to the natural environment. She is interested our
experience of chaos and change as a force that shapes objects,
histories, cultures and personal identities. Her work also meditates
upon the notion that we bring the future to life through our
imaginations.

Before completing a first class honours degree in Photography at the
Queensland College of Art in 2002, Priscilla Bracks studied and
practiced law in Australia. This education was pivotal in the
development of her interest in relationships between human nature,
social justice, culture, media and contemporary issues.

She is represented by MARS Gallery in Melbourne Australia, and Edwina
Corlette Gallery in Brisbane, Australia, where she also lives and
works.

Gavin Sade

Gavin is a designer in the field of interactive computational media,
with a background in music and sonology. Gavin is currently a director
of Kuuki creative media, art and design, teaches part time at the
Queensland University of Technology and is working towards a PhD in
the field of interactive media design. Gavin has exhibited
interactive media works nationally and internationally.

Since 1997 Gavin has written, coordinated and run both undergraduate
and postgraduate classes on media technology, interaction design,
physical computing, virtual reality, contemporary issues in design and
technology, game design, and web development within the faculty of
Creative Industries at the Queensland University of Technology.
